Frederick Marryat’s Metropolitan Magazine, published by Saunders and Otley, was probably the first to carry serial fiction, beginning with his own Peter Simple from June 1832. The most successful was Bentley’s Miscellany, an illustrated magazine initially edited by Dickens and featuring Oliver Twist from its second issue, though he was succeeded as editor as early as 1839 by Ainsworth, whose Jack Sheppard proved equally successful in its pages. Colburn’s New Monthly was a well-established journal which quickly shifted to the miscellany format in imitation of Bentley’s in 1837 and carried serials by Marryat, Ainsworth, and Thomas Hook.

The unprecedented commercial success of Scott’s Waverley novels, the series of lengthy historical romances issued in sumptuous formats from 1814 at increasingly exorbitant prices by Constable, was a major cause not only of the second doubling but also of the emergence of the three-volume set at a guinea-anda-half as the standard format for original Victorian fiction (Gettman, ch. 8). The first example at this price was probably Scott’s Kenilworth of 1821, which, like its predecessors in the Waverley series, sold more than 10 000 copies as a triple-decker within a few years of publication.

However, they began to pick up from the fourth number with the appearance of Sam Weller and had reached close to 40 000 before the final double instalment appeared in November 1837. com - licensed to Universitetsbiblioteket i Tromso - PalgraveConnect - 2011-03-15 Serial Fiction Price* Character Notes† Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine Fraser’s Magazine Metropolitan Magazine The Dublin University Magazine Bentley’s Miscellany The New Monthly Magazine Ainsworth’s Magazine Douglas Jerrold’s Shilling Magazine Sharpe’s London Magazine The Train Macmillan’s Magazine The Cornhill Magazine Good Words Temple Bar The Sixpenny Magazine The St.
