While I was focusing on Porter’s speciﬁc criticisms of the theory, they saw the bigger picture – that by 30 Establishing strategic management as an academic discipline criticizing the resource-based view, Porter was actually beginning to legitimate it as a theoretical perspective. But only Michael Porter could have wielded such an inﬂuence, and this is what my colleagues recognized.
