Page 30 "I already have two," Anna said. " "Hmmm," he said, and gazed solemnly at her plate. " Anna giggled. "Sit down, Keith," Tété said. " Keith rocked back on his heels and continued to stand. "Sit down, son," she said. " he said. "Can't you? " "I could," she said. "Don't you worry about that. " "You! " He broke off and sat down. He had shocked himself. She was shocked, too. " she said. " He shook his head and swayed a little in his chair.  . " Tété got up and came around the table. " she said.

He was always quiet, and Anna, although she was sure he liked her, often felt uncomfortable with him. It was as if he were waiting, looking at you expectantly out of his intelligent light green eyes, with a mocking smile, and waiting for some gesture, some word that would make true friendship possible. And yet when you gave it, when you tried, he slipped away, as if after all that were not what he wanted. Tonight he sat in Selina's kitchen, across the table from Tété, with that queer mocking smile on his face, and while he didn't "sass" Tété, everything he said bordered on impudence.

She was shocked, too. " she said. " He shook his head and swayed a little in his chair.  . " Tété got up and came around the table. " she said. She bent over him, looking into his face. "Your eyes are bloodshot," she said, and then, straightening up, stared down at him in incredulous outrage. "Keith Baird, you been in Selina's dewberry wine," she said. " He got up from the table, swaying. "I'm sick," he said. He ran out of the kitchen door into the chicken yard, and vomited. He was trying to get out of sight behind the chicken house, but he could not.
